Commissioned on 16 March 1970, HMAS Coonawarra has grown significantly over the decades, moving from its original Berrimah site to Larrakeyah in December 2003. Today it forms part of the Larrakeyah Defence Precinct near the mouth of the Beagle Gulf. As a key Navy port and gateway to Australia's northern neighbours, Darwin hosts around 100 visiting Australian and foreign warships each year, with close to 700 Navy personnel based in the area supporting fleet operations and border integrity efforts.
